No tenant yet for Target’s massive Polo Park site

WINNIPEG — The developer of the former Canad Inn stadium site says there still is no replacement for Target when it closes next week.

“There is no interest at that site at a rate that would make it feasible,” said Sandy Shindleman, the president and CEO of Shindico. “Water parks want to use it, indoor flea markets want to use it, non profits want to use it but we need something to bolster the retail in Polo Park.”

Shindleman says the building was custom designed for Target which will make it even more difficult to find a new tenant.

“We need to find the right tenant and it takes a lot of money to refit a space,” he said.

Shindleman also said the city will see less money because Target didn’t stick around.

“The municipal taxes paid on that building and land go to retire the debt on the stadium and obviously the assessment will be less on the building vacant,” he said.

He also said Shindico is actively reaching out to businesses to find new tenants for vacant spaces but doesn’t want to rush any companies.

“We aren’t going to let people come in to fail and if we need to leave it vacant for that purpose we are prepared to do that because we don’t want anyone to get hurt,” Shindleman said.
