U of L student gains national recognition

Frazer Sloan will be the first to admit he underachieved in high school.

“Honestly, I played basketball and video games. I was not a student, I just kind of got by.”

But he did enough to earn entrance into the University of Lethbridge, and from there, everything changed.

“To see the difference since kind of that High School experience is really neat to see where I’ve been able to come,” said Sloan. “But also that the sky is still the limit and there’s a lot of opportunity out there for me.”

Now in his third year in the Faculty of Management, Sloan has become one of the top business students in Canada.  He recently learned he is one of only 10 students across the country to win the Futures Fund Scholarship of over $5,000.

“I was really excited!  Right away I called my parents, and they were probably more excited than me. But, that’s just kind of the way it goes,” said Sloan with a chuckle.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

From a high school student whose marks averaged in the low 70s, to a business wiz with a near 4.0 GPA – it’s pretty clear Sloan has come a long way.

“I felt like I had something to prove, knowing I hadn’t given it my all. it just came down to hard work and being productive.  I don’t claim any intelligence over any other students. I just work hard and do what I can.”

Sloan’s Professor Wilf Roesler has seen his dedication first hand, and knows exactly what the third year student is capable of.

“He’s a great student in that, he’s motivated. He puts in the time very clearly, and has a real passion for learning the material that he’s covering,” said Roesler

It’s that passion and his new outlook on schooling that has Sloan thriving.

“It’s really just motivated me to convey to younger students, or my family, that in university it helps to be smart, but the success I’ve had has come from perseverance and hard work,” said Sloan.

And, it would appear Sloan is just getting started in his academic pursuits.  Once he finishes his degree, he plans to study law.
