MONTREAL – The Archdioceses of Montreal has confirmed that 78-year-old cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte has been in palliative care for the past 48 hours.
The cardinal was hospitalized at the end of last summer and his health has since deteriorated.
Turcotte was the Archbishop of Montreal for over two decades from 1990 to 2012.
He was famous for being a charismatic, approachable figure – a man of the people.
He oversaw churches closing, sex abuse scandals and upheavals caused by the population’s growing disaffection with the church.
