Father, three children escape from house fire in Victoria

A Victoria family is safe this morning after managing to escape their home when it went up in flames.

The fire broke out on Rudlin Street around 10:30 p.m. last night.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke was pouring from the main floor. Within minutes, the fire broke through the roof.

A man and three children were inside the house at the time, but were able to get out safely. The mother was at work.

No one was injured.

The house was destroyed, but fire crews managed to stop the flames from spreading to nearby homes.

Firefighters have remained on scene all night, putting out hot spots.

There’s no word yet on what may have sparked the fire, but witnesses indicated hearing the sound of a large explosion. There were also reports of another explosion after the initial blast.

Victoria fire inspector Chris Kelly told Global News the fire appears to have started on the back deck patio.

Kelly says they have found a few propane tanks on the property, which could explain why the witnesses heard explosion sounds. It is not clear if the tanks played a role in starting the fire.

Investigators say almost nothing will be recoverable from the house. The tenants didn’t have insurance.
