Saint John warning motorists to expect busy pothole season

SAINT JOHN – With temperatures starting to become more spring-like, the City of Saint John is warning motorists to expect a busy pothole season.

With the deep frost, city officials say people should anticipate more problems this year.

Potholes are started as water seeps through cracks in pavement. It builds up and softens the road base, then freezes and as the ice expands it pushes the pavement up.

When the water dries a hole is left beneath the weakened roadway. The pavement collapses under the weight of the traffic, leaving your pothole.

Auto repair shops like OK Tire in Quispamsis is already dealing with vehicles damaged by hitting potholes.

“Sometimes a vehicle’s wheels are damaged and sometimes the damage cannot be repaired,” said Paul Gallant of OK Tire.

“All you can do is be aware of your surroundings when you’re driving knowing what time of year it is.”

In Saint John, motorists are encouraged to report any potholes they see to the city.
