EDMONTON — Earth Hour will be marked by people around the world next weekend. To get a jump start on the event, a group from MacEwan University has launched a new website it hopes will help people become more environmentally conscious.

The myEarthHour online tracking tool launched Saturday. It provides people with tips and ideas on how they can reduce their environmental footprint. Students and staff who created the tool hope to show people how small changes can make a big difference when it comes to the sustainability of our planet.

“We want to think about this as an ongoing behaviour and how this might introduce small steps or small changes in your life in the name of preserving the environment,” said Dr. Leo Wong, as assistant professor with MacEwan University’s School of Business.

The website rewards participants with points for doing environmentally friendly activities. The points are tallied to encourage a bit of friendly competition between users. Creators hope it will help people remain environmentally conscious year round.

“A lot of people who do participate in Earth Hour turn off their lights for the 60 minutes during Earth Hour, then they kind of go back to their regular routines,” said Wong.

Earth Hour started in 2007. The event is marked between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. around the world on Saturday, March 28. People are encouraged to power down for one hour to raise awareness about climate change.

To sign up for the online tracking tool head to the my earth hour website.
