February 2015 second-warmest on record

TORONTO — For some Canadians, it might be hard to believe this, but February 2015 was the second-warmest February on record — globally, that is.

While people in Regina, Toronto and Montreal were in a deep freeze, other parts of the world were experiencing record warmth.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Russia temperature variations went as high as four to five degrees Celsius above average. In Australia, it was the second-warmest February in that country’s history, with records going back to 1910.

Sea ice in the Arctic was 6.2 per cent below the 1981-2010 average for the month of February, the third-lowest on record.

For the months of December to February, the average global land and ocean temperature was 0.79 C above the average. On land alone, it was 1.46 C above the average, with the ocean being 0.54 C above average.
