WATCH: Wisconsin police help rescue skunk with head stuck in toy

Two officers in Plover, Wisconsin demonstrated their dedication “to serve and protect” when they responded to a call about a distressed skunk on Monday.

Officers Andrew Hopfensperger and Nate Shulfer found the skunk with its head stuck in what they thought was the top of a steel fence post.

“It turned out to be an old, hardened chew toy,” Shulfer told WSAW. “I figured I could try to pop it off his head with one of our vehicle opening tools.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Hopfensperger filmed his partner’s futile attempts to release the skunk’s head.

Shulfer is seen approaching the animal with trepidation, trying to knock the old chew toy off, then darting away to avoid being sprayed.

They eventually called for backup from a nearby animal control centre, which lent a live trap to the cops.

The skunk walked into the trap and the officers were able to release its head from the toy. It was then released into the wild outside of the town.

The animal was uninjured and the cops remained unsprayed.

How the skunk ended up with its head stuck in the dog toy remains a mystery.
