Vernon parents bring transportation safety worries to city

VERNON – A group of Vernon parents headed to city council Monday to voice concerns about their children’s safety getting to and from school. Beairsto Elementary is located on a major roadway and now a drive-through and gas bar are planned across the street.

“I’m just trying to draw attention to the fact that we have issues with the transportation around Beairsto and 27 [Street] and 35 [Avenue] as it is, and I’m just worried about what the impact is going to be with this development and the additional traffic because I believe there will be additional traffic and really I want to make sure that our kids remain safe,” says Darlene Wood, chairperson for the PAC Transportation Safety Committee.

It seems getting students to and from school already worries some parents.

“Every single time I go to the school I have an issue or a scare or a something and the stress of that is quite intense,” says parent Quinn Vienneau.

Parents are suggesting a number of changes to address their concerns, including reducing the speed limit on 27th St.

“I don’t know if there would be an appetite. It really is.. one of our major roads but it is something that, I think, staff is going to take a look and come back and [we’ll] take a look at it then,” says acting mayor Catherine Lord.

But the planned development near the school is already tied to traffic signal upgrades at 27th St. and 35th Ave. The developer is required to pay part of the cost and the city is also chipping in.

All 11 suggestions raised by parents will be addressed at an upcoming council meeting. The acting mayor says she also wants to look at previous planning that has been done.

“It all depends on our financing, I think, to see if we can’t perhaps do some other things that would increase the safety there,” says Lord.

The developer declined a recorded interview but indicated he was not expecting a lot of traffic as a result of the project and that the traffic impact had already been looked at. He hopes to start construction this month.
