Grace period over for speeders in Sask. photo radar zones

Caught speeding in a photo radar trap in Saskatchewan? Tickets will be handed out starting March 8. File / Global News

SASKATOON – A three-month grace period for speeders in photo radar zones is coming to an end. Starting March 8, the owners of vehicles caught speeding in those zones will be getting tickets instead of warning letters.

“The goal of the photo speed enforcement pilot is zero tickets, zero crashes and zero fatalities,” said Andrew Cartmell, president and CEO of Saskatchewan Government Insurance.

“More drivers getting in the habit of respecting speed limits will have a positive impact on road safety in the province, which is exactly what this pilot hopes to accomplish.”

In high-speed locations, speeding tickets start at $110 plus one dollar for every kilometre over the posted speed limit. In school zones, tickets start at $190 and go up two dollars for every kilometre over the limit.

The grace period was suppose to last two months, but was extended by a month after a processing error. The driver of a vehicle was sent a warning letter in error stating he was doing 106 km/h in a 30 km/h Saskatoon school zone.
