EDMONTON — Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Highway 16 and Highway 60 for a serious two-vehicle collision Wednesday morning.

Stony Plain/Spruce Grove RCMP say a Nissan Versa was travelling west on Highway 16 when it pulled off the highway and onto an emergency vehicle turn around point on the median.  Then, the vehicle pulled into the eastbound lanes of Highway 16. Officers say it did not yield to eastbound traffic and it collided with a gravel truck.

The driver was the only person in the Nissan. He was flown to an Edmonton hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the gravel truck was not injured.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The eastbound lane of Highway 16 was closed just past Highway 44. Eastbound traffic was being redirected onto Highway 44.
