WINNIPEG — Ice dams and snow buildup may soon be a problem for homeowners. With temperatures rising and then swiftly dropping over the last few weeks, roof maintenance workers say it’s an issue Winnipeggers should keep an eye on, especially as the spring thaw approaches.

“You may still have an issue with ice damming during the thaw, so clearing the snow from your roof is still an important thing to do,” said Jeff Ehlers at Above All Roofing and Restorations.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Residents with older homes or houses that have had issues with ice damming in the past should keep a close eye on the buildup on the edges of the roof, Ehlers said.

“Usually if you see any kind of water spots in the house, that’s the worst sign that the water is getting inside the house,” said Ehlers.

Although it may be tempting to knock the ice down yourself, Ehlers recommends having it removed by professionals.
