Updated: Home explosion sends three to hospital

REGINA – Three men have been sent to hospital with serious injuries after an explosion and fire at their north-end home Tuesday evening.

Regina police officers are at the house and are holding the scene until police complete their investigation to determine if criminal charges will be laid.

SaskEnergy completed its preliminary investigation late Tuesday night, which indicated no evidence of a natural gas leak. Crews are also doing an examination of the area’s underground gas system as a precaution.

Firefighters were called at to the 100 block of Cooper Crescent at 7:12 PM.

“[Witnesses] heard a loud pop,” said Gerard Kay, Deputy Fire Chief of Regina Fire & Protective Services.

The explosion blew one of the home’s walls out by several feet, blasted the front picture window 20 feet into the yard, and dislodged the home from its foundation.

“As of right now, the structure is very unstable,” said Kay at the scene.

Most of the flames were contained in the basement of the duplex apartment.

“The suspicion is it started down in the basement area,” said Kay.

A 35-year-old man and a 19-year-old man both have serious injuries, and a 28-year-old man had injuries that are described as minor.

Half of the structure is not salvageable. Kay’s early estimate pegs the damage to cost at least $250,000.

Two people in a neighbouring unit were home at the time of the explosion but were not injured. They were able to enter their home to retrieve personal belongings before leaving to stay somewhere else for the night.
