REGINA – One of Saskatchewan’s crown corporations is warning its customers about a phone scam. SaskEnergy says it knows of at least 10 cases of the scam.
The scam has someone pretending to be with the company threatening to cut off natural gas to a customer unless a payment is made. The caller then asks for a payment by prepaid debit or credit card.
SaskEnergy officials say while they do contact customers from time-to-time, they never ask for payment over the phone and do not accept prepaid debit or credit cards.
The calls are reported to come from 1-800-983-1304 with the caller ID reading SaskEnergy, however the display may vary.
The scam is similar to one from January affecting SaskPower where customers were threatened to have their power cut off unless they made a payment from a prepaid power card or Visa card.
