Crane drops heavy load on power lines at Halifax construction site

HALIFAX – A section of north end Halifax is closed to traffic after a crane dropped a heavy load onto power lines at a construction site.

The incident happened at around 2 p.m. and left the material, which is used to set concrete, dangling from the power lines.

Traffic has since been blocked on Almon Street between Gottingen and Agricola Streets. As well, Isleville Street is closed between Bilby and Bloomfield Streets.

Power to the area is cut off.

Firefighters, police, Nova Scotia Power crews, and representatives from the Department of Labour and Advanced Education of Nova Scotia have all been on scene.

Brothers Adrian and Daniel Comeau live in an apartment building directly underneath the crane and said they were frightened when the accident happened.

“A giant piece of construction almost fell on my apartment,” Adrian said. “There was a giant flash, the power went out and somebody was screaming, ‘get the heck out of your apartment!”‘

The two men ran out of their apartment without their coats.

“All the construction workers yelling about something. I didn’t know what was going on,” said Daniel.

The brothers have not been allowed back into their home but were allowed to move their car from the street.

Crews are now deciding the safest way to remove the material from the power lines, which may involve using a second crane.
