Manitoba junior curlers make Canadian history

WINNIPEG — Four Manitoba curlers have accomplished something no junior team has done before in Canada.

For the second straight year Braden Calvert and his team won the Canadian junior curling championships, the first time a team has done that with the same four players.

“I couldn’t imagine playing with any other guys,” said Calvert.

The gold medals have earned them the chance to compete for Canada in Estonia at the world championships later this month.

And they aren’t the only junior curlers from Manitoba sporting the maple leaf around the world.

Matt Dunstone and his University of Manitoba teammates just left to represent Canada in Spain at the Winter Universiade Games.

“There’s a lot of pressure being from Canada and what not, everyone expects you to do well and you know, we expect ourselves to do well,” said Dunstone.

With Dunstone winning nationals in 2013 and Calvert cleaning up the last two years, Manitoba has now won three consecutive Canadian junior titles, something that hasn’t been done in close to 60 years.

“It speaks volumes to some of the things that the clubs are doing locally as well as some of the programs that we’re running,” said Curl Manitoba executive director Craig Baker. “We’re really excited to see some even teams below them coming up as well.”
