Freezing rain warning lifted for all Alberta areas

EDMONTON – A freezing raining warning issued for the City of Edmonton Wednesday has been lifted.

Environment Canada issued the warning for parts of central Alberta early Wednesday afternoon.

As of 4:00 p.m., the warning had been lifted for Edmonton, but was still in place for regions east and south of the city.

Then, around 6 p.m., the warning was lifted for all remaining regions in Alberta. The conditions continued to move east.

“A band of freezing rain has developed just west of Edmonton,” said Environment Canada. “The duration is expected to be brief but may be quite intense in some locations. Temperatures will rise above zero this afternoon.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.”

Barrhead/Westlock RCMP issued a travel advisory at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, saying there had been numerous collisions due to extremely icy conditions.

Strathcona County RCMP also issued a warning to drivers Wednesday afternoon after officers responded to several collisions in 30-minutes.

Boyle RCMP also urged caution, saying Highways 63, 55, 663 and 831 were in “less than desirable” condition Wednesday.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, ETS said it was experiencing city-wide delays due to icy roads.

Edmonton Public Schools is also advising students and parents that school buses may run behind schedule Wednesday afternoon due to the slick road conditions. Live GPS information about the location of school buses can be found on the SchoolZone website.

Roads and sidewalks in south Edmonton were slick with ice early Wednesday afternoon.
