Oregon family shocked to find stray bullet in baby’s crib

TORONTO – An amazing discovery has left one Oregon family both shocked and relieved after they found a stray bullet in their one-year-old daughter’s crib.

Now police are saying the round was fired during a gang-related shooting over 25 blocks away. The bullet allegedly came crashing through a window of their home and fell only inches away from their sleeping daughter.

“I went to go pick her up because she started to cry, and I noticed there was glass all over her face,” mother Christina Cone told WKTV News in Oregon.

“We just thought it was a rock, and [then] we pick up a little bullet.”

Portland police were called to the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church this past Saturday night following a report of multiple gunshots.

Portland Police Bureau’s Gang Enforcement Team found evidence of what they’re calling a gang-related shooting, although no victims were found.

Portland Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said more tests will be needed to determine if the bullet found in little Ellie’s crib was a result of the shooting which took place over a mile away.

However, Simpson told Oregon Live that “it is unlikely it came from anywhere else,” because there were no reports of any other shootings in the vicinity, and the Cones’ home was hit around the same time the reports of gunfire were first called in.

“Bullets travel.  They travel a long way,” Simpson said.

One-year-old Ellie Cone will be just fine after her close call – but it’s her parents that may need some time to process it all.

“It was obviously very scary,” said Christina.  “We’re very happy she didn’t get hurt, or that any of us did.”
