N.B. women not getting enough physical activity: Health Council

MONCTON – A new health report suggests fewer New Brunswick women are getting physical activity in the province.

The Population Health Snapshot was released by the New Brunswick Health Council on Tuesday. The report found that fewer women are having “physical activity during free-time, moderately active or active.”

That’s no surprise to Michelle Cirullo who runs Pink Fitness Studio in Moncton.

She’s also a mother.

“It’s hard to find that balance of finding time for us,” she said. “While not abandoning the family.”

Mindy Moore is one of her clients and says being a mother of three makes it hard to find time to exercise.

“I’m home with the baby all morning and picking up the twins and doing homework all afternoon and making supper and trying to get them to bed before the sitter comes so I can go workout,” she said.

The report also reveals fewer New Brunswickers are rating their health as being very good or excellent.

Stephane Robichaud speaks for the Council. He says the information in the report can help health authorities identify areas that need more attention.

“What this says is we have a higher prevalancy than what we see in the rest of the country and our ability to better identify those people and know where they are,” he said.

“More importantly it helps align our health services from a prevention and promotion perspective to better align those when we interact those individuals.”
