Above seasonal temperatures in the forecast

SASKATOON – The heat is on across Saskatchewan with above freezing temperatures in the forecast. It will feel upwards of 50 degrees warmer in Saskatoon this week compared to the first week of January when wind chill values dropped as low as -50.

January began with temperatures trending seven to eight degrees below normal. The coldest day Saskatoon has seen in years was recorded on Jan. 4 when temperatures dropped down to -37.6 with wind chill values as low as -50 recorded in the city.

Just over a week later, a push of warm, moist Pacific air is bringing the mercury up into possible positive territory in the days ahead. The mild air does come at a cost as the freeze/thaw of the present snowpack on roads along with possible mixed precipitation in the coming days will make for some icy morning commutes and sloppy afternoon drives home.

On Tuesday night, Saskatoon is expected to see snow along with a risk of freezing rain. Wednesday night into Thursday also poses a risk for some snow.

Thursday is expected to be a few degrees shy of the freezing mark, followed by a warmer Friday, which may once again come with a slight risk of mixed precipitation. Beyond Friday, a slight cooling will occur but only sliding back into mid-minus single digit daytime highs through the weekend and into next week.

Although the coming days will feel fairly warm, it is not expected to be historic heat.
