Saskatoon company part of Canada’s largest export win

SASKATOON – The largest government manufacturing export contract in Canadian history is benefitting workers and businesses here in Saskatoon. SED Systems has received an $11.7 million contract to supply General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-C) with power control modules.

Saskatoon-based SED Systems will manufacture over 4,600 units over half a decade. The company is one of 500 Canadian firms to benefit from the GDL-S contract for exports to Saudi Arabia.

“This was a huge win for Canada. There was a competition when it was awarded, it was a multi-billion dollar contract and therefore in order for them to succeed they need to have very solid sub-contractors and SED Systems filled that gap,” said Lynne Yelich, minister of state for foreign affairs.

“It is not only sustenance of the jobs and the capabilities that we have, but it also allows up to maintain and keep that group of engineers and production people busy and employed for the next five years,” said Patrick Thera, SED Systems president.

GDLS-C’s contract will create and sustain over 3,000 new, high-quality manufacturing jobs in Canada each year, according to the federal government. Canada’s advanced manufacturing sector contributes an estimated $164 billion in GDP and supports about 1.7 million jobs.
