TORONTO – Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold weather alert for several parts of the GTA including Toronto.

The weather agency issued the alert shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday warning very cold temperatures combined with strong northerly winds will result in a wind chill of nearly minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Environment Canada says the extreme cold temperatures can lead to frost bite and hypothermia and seniors, infants, winter sports enthusiasts, and people experiencing homelessness are most at risk.

A man was found unconscious near Yonge-Dundas square Tuesday morning wearing only a t-shirt and jeans. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. There was no extreme weather alert in effect at the time which would have resulted in warming centres across the city being opened for people experiencing homelessness.
