WINNIPEG – The City of Winnipeg projects a deficit of $6.1 million in its financial status report dated Nov. 30, which was released Friday.
It’s a marked improvement over the forecast in the report dated Sept. 30, which projected a $14.9 million deficit.
Lower than anticipated salary and benefit costs and higher photo radar revenue projections arising from fines issued in construction and school zones have contributed to the deficit reduction, the city said in a news release. Deferred road maintenance due to winter’s early onset also delayed some expenditures.
The forecast deficits are primarily the result of an over-expenditure on snow removal and ice control, the city said. The city budgeted $26.7 million but spent $49.6 million. Frozen water pipes also cost the city an estimated $4 million.
The report will go to the city’s finance committee on Thursday.
