WINNIPEG — It was a quiet New Year’s Day in the city but there was some exciting news at The Forks. The Red River Mutual Trail from The Forks to the Norwood Bridge on the Red River opened Thursday.

Dozens of Winnipeggers chose to spend their first day of 2015 outdoors taking advantage of the fresh ice.

“It’s a good way to learn how to skate and it’s a part of being a Manitoban and a Winnipegger,” said Chelsea Thomson, marketing manager at The Forks. “It’s about bundling up, dressing appropriately and having fun.”

After the mild December temperatures, The Forks was unable to work on the river trail for a couple of weeks, and they even closed the rink under the canopy after the ice melted. But now they say they believe the ice is here to stay.

The warming huts are scheduled to be built at the end of January along with the Raw:Almond restaurant on the ice.
