Thousands of Edmontonians expected to shop Boxing Day

EDMONTON – Thousands of people were braving the parking lot chaos and crowds Friday for a Boxing Day deal.

“This season has been very busy,” says Paul Fairbridge from Southgate Centre.

The mall expects to have over a million shoppers come through the doors by season’s end. Store supervisors say it’s the big ticket items that people are shopping for. At the top of the list: home appliances and electronics.

“Flat screen TVs and phones are very hot items,” explains Future Shop Supervisor Darek Dolinski.

An online survey by Ebates.ca found that nearly 40 per cent of Canadians will shop on Boxing Day.

The Retail Council of Canada says holiday promotions can be more like a marathon than a sprint with retailers offering Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. But that doesn’t stop people from Boxing Day shopping.

“Many people were lined up outside the building very early this morning,” adds Dolinski. “The rushes continue and it’s going to be consistent throughout the day.”

Boxing Day can be a love/hate relationship for many consumers, but what drives people to continue to shop on this day is simple: everyone wants a deal.
