Warmer Winnipeg weather causes slushy streets

WINNIPEG – Slushy, slippery, wet and sloppy streets. That’s the price Winnipeggers are paying for the warmer weather.

The recent rise in temperatures is melting snow and leaving messy driving conditions.

The city has been busy trying to clear the streets before the weekend.

“We’ve moved into what we would call the non-regional collector bus route network and we’ve been plowing those throughout the night and throughout the day,” said Winnipeg’s manager of streets maintenance Jim Berezowsky.

It’s not only roads that are suffering. Many outdoor rinks are starting to close and others are preparing for melting.

“We’re watching the ice regularly. We have got the guys out, they groom every morning. … They either clear snow or do some flooding,” said The Forks communications manager Chelsea Thomson.

Warmer weather is still ahead. Environment Canada is predicting temperatures will continue to rise to well above normal in the next few days, possibly breaking records.

But it’s the overnight freeze that creates black ice in the morning, making outdoor conditions dangerous.

“As the temperatures dip into the evening time we’ll see some freezing going on and again motorists will start slipping around, so they have to adjust accordingly,” said Brian Smiley of Manitoba Public Insurance.

One more reason to slow down.
