Online Vs Local Christmas Shopping

It’s getting down to crunch time when it comes to buying Christmas presents, and those with stores in the downtown core want you to keep them in mind.

Many people are going online to buy their gifts, but Lethbridge business owners think keeping the money in town is better for our economy.

Mayor Chris Spearman is also advocating for local shopping, saying there are many positives to spending your money in town.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It’s about getting a better experience when you shop in person. You also get the engagement with the other people that live in the city and work in the service industry. So it’s a much more positive experience when you do your shopping that way.”

To help bring more people downtown for shopping, the Downtown BRZ is once again sponsoring ambassadors to walk the core and plug expired parking meters with its Festive Season Parking Meter Program.

Executive Director of the Downtown BRZ Ted Stilson explains, “What we’re really trying to do is to encourage people to think of shopping as less of a transaction, and more as an experience.”

The program runs until Christmas Eve.
