New Brunswickers warned to expect power outages, flooding from storm

FREDERICTON – New Brunswick’s Emergency Measures Organization is warning the public to be prepared for a major storm that’s about to hit the province.

EMO director Greg MacCallum says by Thursday morning, northern and central regions of the province could receive up to 40 centimetres of snow while southern areas along the Bay of Fundy are forecast to get more than 100 millimetres of rain.

When the storm begins, central areas of the province will get a few hours of freezing rain before changing from snow to rain.

MacCallum says people should be prepared for extended power outages and the potential for flooded streets and basements.

He says driving conditions could be treacherous on Wednesday and people should have supplies to last at least 72 hours.

MacCallum says recent storms have made New Brunswickers better prepared for bad weather, but people need to exercise caution if using generators or any open flames, such as candles.
