Coderre commemorates ICAO’s 70th anniversary in Chicago

CHICAGO – Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre will be in Chicago Monday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Chicago Convention.

The document establishes the creation of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is based in Montreal.

Coderre was invited to the anniversary ceremonies by ICAO president Raymond Benjamin.

Since the ratification of the Convention in 1944, ICAO has established more than 10,000 principles and techniques to improve the safety, efficiency and security of air travel.

Coderre says Montrealers should feel proud that the United Nations chose Montreal for one of its specialized agencies.

The mayor points out ICAO is the most important international organization in Montreal and highlights its 500 employees, its international influence and its incentive for companies in the aviation industry to operate in the city.

Other dignitaries attending Monday’s events include U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
