Behind the scenes look at new KGH surgical centre

KELOWNA – Kelowna General Hospital is set to open some of the most technically advanced operating rooms in the country. The hospital expansion including the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre is making progress and set to open next fall. However, fundraising for some key pieces of equipment is ongoing. The KGH Foundation is appealing to the public to raise $2 million in the next nine months.

The third floor of the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre will host 13 types of surgery in 15 state of the art suites. The surgery suites will be 60 percent larger than current ones and the bulk of the new equipment will hang from robotic arms, which will free up floor space.

The Hybrid Operating Room will be one of the most advanced in the country where surgery will be combined with diagnostic imaging. Specialized teams can come together for more complex surgeries and 3-D images will be accessed in real time.

It’s expected the $381 million dollar surgical floor will decrease wait times for patients because it’s often operating room space that patients are waiting on.

Staff hope the new facility and advanced technology will attract young residents and surgeons who are eager to learn the very latest surgical techniques and use some of the best equipment available. The KGH Foundation has raised $10 million for the project through its Be a Lifesaver Capital Campaign. However, the foundation is still $2 million shy of its goal.

The foundation is making a push now asking the public to donate in hopes of reaching that goal and having all necessary equipment in place when the Heart and Surgical Centre opens in September of 2015.
