UPDATE: Truck driver killed in Armstrong

 

UPDATE THURSDAY:  The truck driver, John Elliot Sleypen, was employed by Valley Roadways LTD.

When asked by Global Okanagan News if proper safety procedures were in place and being followed, the company provide an email response from Vice President Lawrence Cantera.

“First and foremost , our thoughts and prayers are with the Family. Our commitment to Safety and the well-being of our employees is and will remain our top priority throughout our organization. We offer no comment at this time to the occurrence of this horrific tragedy due to the fact that the investigation is still on going.”

UPDATE THURSDAY: RCMP say a transport truck driver has died as a result of Wednesday’s incident.

Authorities were called to Rapid-Span Ltd. in Armstrong shortly before 1:30 p.m. following reports of a load falling on top of the driver.

Police confirm a Kamloops man in his 50’s died in hospital after heavy timbers fell on him while he was untying the load.

The victim’s name has not been released.

ORIGINAL STORY: 

ARMSTRONG, B.C. — A transport driver has suffered life-threatening injuries after a load of lumber fell on top of him at Rapid-Span Ltd. in Armstrong at around 1:20 Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency officials say the victim, a man in his 50’s, was untying a load of wood on his truck when the wood shifted and fell on top of him. He was transported by ambulance to Vernon Jubilee Hospital in critical condition.
