Enterovirus D68 kills 2, paralyzes 4 in B.C., including Kamloops football player

VANCOUVER – There are more concerns this morning about the Enterovirus, which has now caused two deaths and four cases of paralysis in B.C.

Health officials have been warning about the D-68 strain since September. There have been about 200 confirmed cases, including a Kamloops man who has gone from a healthy strong football player to being treated at GF Strong.

Evan Mutrie’s family is crowdfunding to help cover expenses. Evan was playing football for the Kamloops Broncos and is now dealing with the virus that has left him paralyzed from the neck down, requiring ventilator assistance.

Experts say the disease mainly affects younger people with underlying respiratory issues like asthma.

Enterovirus symptoms are similar to the common cold, however, the strain in the U.S. has caused wheezing, and trouble breathing. The virus is also believed to be responsible for the death of a first grade student in Arizona.

To prevent the illness, the Centre for Disease Control has the following tips:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds;
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands;
  • Avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or utensils with people who are sick;
  • Cover your mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze;
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick; and ·
  • Stay at home from work or school when sick.

They also warn parents to seek medical care for their children immediately if they start having trouble breathing or other respiratory problems.
