WINNIPEG – Premier Greg Selinger says the addition of two $100,000 salaried positions to his personal communications staff is all about better serving Manitobans, not himself.
“We reposition people to provide the best service to the people of Manitoba,” Selinger said Tuesday.
Selinger has been accused of adding to his staff a time when the province faces a massive deficit.
One of the newest hires, Heather Grant-Jury, was added the same day five cabinet ministers quit their portfolios, citing major concerns with the Premier’s leadership abilities.
The second communications employee, Paul Mckie, was hired one week later.
Mckie comes from the labor union Unifor – which also represents Global TV Winnipeg’s Union.
When a reporter suggested the timing makes it appear the new staff were hired to help himself, not Manitobans, Selinger said “That’s inaccurate.”
Selinger wouldn’t say if the newly hired staff are replacing existing staff who were doing similar jobs – saying it’s a “personnel issue.”
