Officials reminding the public to ‘lock it or lose it’ during holidays

FREDERICTON, N.B. – The Insurance Bureau of Canada is working with police departments across New Brunswick to “Lock It or Lose It,” encouraging people to be smart with their belongings, and keep them out of sight during this busy shopping season.

“It may be innocent enough,” said Amanda Dean, Vice-President Atlantic for IBC.

“It may be just running into the mall to grab a coffee or pick up a parcel that you had on hold. You may just be a few minutes. But it only takes a few minutes for someone to spot a valuable item in your backseat, to smash the window to get it – or, if you’ve left your door unlocked, you’re making it that much easier for them.”

Fredericton Police Chief Leanne Fitch said Monday community partnerships are always necessary, but at this time of year they can take a lot of strain off the department.

“Help us help you,” she said.

“Because if you’re taking that extra time to be mindful of your personal property, then that’s less strain on your police resources for responding to calls after the fact. And we’d rather see people not be victimized in the first instance. And these are in many cases preventable crimes.”

Keep these tips in mind while shopping to help stay safer:

  • Always store valuables in your trunk, under a seat, or out of sight.
  • Never leave identification, passports, or wallets out in the open.
  • Make sure to lock your car doors, even when parked on a street or in your driveway.
