A seven-year-old boy rescued from a house fire in Nanaimo on Saturday has died from his injuries in B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Provincial coroner Barb McLintock confirmed the boy passed away on Sunday morning, but was unable to comment further as the investigation is in its preliminary stages.

The boy was trapped in a home fully engulfed by flames in the 300 block of Albert street. RCMP officers were first on scene at around 3:15 in the morning. They were told there was a child inside, but were unable to enter the house due to the intensity of the flames.

However, fire crews were able to enter the building and find the child. He was stabilized on scene and taken to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver via hovercraft.

The home had a retail business on the main floor. Eight other people who lived on the second floor are currently being assisted by the City of Nanaimo Community Assistance Program.
