Extreme cold warning for half of Saskatchewan

SASKATOON – Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold weather warning Saturday for the southern half of Saskatchewan. These warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chills creates an elevated risk of frost bite and hypothermia.

A cold arctic airmass has settled over the Prairies resulting in frigid temperatures this weekend. These temperatures combined with even light wind gusts will feel like minus 40° or even colder.

Overnight and Sunday morning temperatures will see the mercury dip the lowest.

Environment Canada is asking people to exercise caution and bundle up appropriately when venturing outside.

According to the agency, watch for cold-related symptoms which include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Colour change of finger and toes
  • Pain, numbness and tickling sensation in extremities
  • Muscle pain, stiffness, swelling, restricted movement, weakness
  • Itching or pale skin

If a person experiences these symptoms, move them indoors and warm them up.
