It’s a new beginning for a Kelowna church that sits on a valuable piece of land that was originally bought for a mere $200.
St-Paul’s United on Lakeshore is coming down to make way for a new church. But this church is like no other in Kelowna. Judging by the blueprints, it actually won’t look much like your conventional church. It will be an arts and cultural centre with a retail stores, offices, condos and a 250 seat auditorium.
“What we want to do is arts as a main medium to try to bridge the gap between church and community and in the process, we hope the church will grow,” says Pastor Richard Chung. During demolition, crews found a time capsule. A welded concrete box.
What’s in it, is anyone’s guess.
“I don’t know. There was a Sunday school on this property or adjacent to this property,” says church member, Sue Goodwin. “That was the first building on the site. It was called the Mission Road Sunday School. So maybe there’s something from the Sunday school? It will be interesting to see when we open it.”
Goodwin says the box will be opened during a special service in the near future.
