EDMONTON — Two people were killed Friday evening in a three-vehicle collision in central Alberta.

Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to the collision shortly before 5:30 p.m. It happened on Highway 766, about two kilometres south of Eckville, on the bridge deck of the Medicine River crossing. Fire and EMS crews also responded to the collision.

RCMP say a pick-up truck was heading south on the highway when it crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a northbound SUV. Shortly after the initial collision, a northbound van struck the pick-up truck.

Police say the 46-year-old driver of the pick-up was thrown from the vehicle; officers say it did not appear as though he was wearing his seatbelt. The Benalto, Alberta man was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 30-year-old woman from Condor, Alberta, was also killed in the collision.

The passenger of the SUV, a 56-year-old woman from Rocky Mountain House, was pulled from the vehicle by fire crews and taken to hospital in Red Deer. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The people in the van were not injured in the collision.

The cause is currently under investigation, although RCMP say alcohol may have played a role. Road and weather conditions were not factors, according to RCMP.

The names of the victims will not be released.
