TORONTO – Southern Ontario’s preparing for a snowy night.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for much of the region Wednesday, including Toronto and several other cities in the Toronto area. The weather agency expects five centimetres of snow to fall in the region through Wednesday.

The weather advisory also covers Hamilton, Ottawa, Cornwall, Halton, Kingston, London, Niagara, Oxford-Brant, Peterborough, Sarnia, Waterloo, Windsor and York Region.

Environment Canada says a “fairly-fast moving disturbance” centred over the Great Lakes will move through southern Ontario and into the northwestern part of the province throughout Wednesday.

The band of weather will dump approximately five centimetres of snow on Toronto, the weather agency said, but warned areas closer to the Great Lakes could see a slightly more.

At Pearson International Airport blowing snow forced dozens of flights to be cancelled or delayed. Those waiting for taxis or limos were also warned of longer wait times.

The snow hit Toronto Wednesday afternoon and slowed afternoon rush hour traffic throughout the area. Peel Regional Police tweeted shortly after 5 p.m. that their officers were dealing with nearly 30 collisions as a result of the storm.  They cautioned people to stay home and keep away from slippery roads and sidewalks.

Much of New York State was blanketed in more than five feet of snow this week. Erie County, which includes the city of Buffalo, declared a state of emergency due to the huge amount of snow.
