KELOWNA — The government is fast tracking a road project involving UBCO.
The city of Kelowna in conjunction with the provincial and federal governments announced Monday that they’re moving ahead with the final phase of the John Hindle Drive project.
Phase one, which saw John Hindle Dr. from Glenmore Road to the landfill site, was completed earlier this year.
Phase two will consists of 1.6 kilometres of road connecting Highway 97 to Glenmore Road at UBCO. The project will also include construction of a multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists from Glenmore Road to the Hollywood Road roundabout at Highway 97 near UBCO.
The project was earmarked to begin two years from now but was fast tracked.
“The real significance about today’s announcement is that it’s being made two years earlier than anticipated,” says Kelowna mayor, Walter Gray.
He says Kelowna taxpayers were expected to foot the entire bill but the province and feds stepped in — each contributing $3.5 million to the $11 million project.
Gray having the province and feds on board is saving Kelowna taxpayers $7 million.
