Temperatures to plunge across B.C. due to Arctic air flow; good news for local mountains

WATCH: After setting a warm-weather record in October, a cold snap is now cooling off the Province. While the cold weather isn’t everyone idea of fun some are benefiting. Randene Neill explains.

VANCOUVER – Temperatures across B.C. are set to plunge over the next couple of days due to a major change in the position of the jet stream over the province.

A much colder flow of air emanating from the Arctic will strengthen over the next couple of days and temperatures will fall five to 10 degrees below average for this time in November.

Global BC meteorologist Mark Madryga says the coldest air so far this season is being felt in the South Coast with some communities seeing their first frost of the winter. Temperatures across B.C. could fall to near-daily record cold as well by mid-week.

As high pressure builds over the Interior Monday night, strong and gusty north winds will develop across the Interior, while the northeast outflow winds will blast on to the South Coast.

Madryga says regions such as the Fraser Valley, Southern Gulf Islands, Howe Sound and Greater Victoria will be open to the chilly winds of 60 km/h or more Monday night and on Tuesday.

For the South Coast, sunshine will dominate our weather for at least the next three days.

The drop in temperature is good news for the local mountains.

In Whistler, more than 200 snow guns are going full tilt on the mountain, blowing out more than 22 million liters of water in a 24 hour period.

Crews are hoping to open the mountain for business on Nov. 27th, with the North Shore hills expected to follow by mid-December.

Simon Whitehead with Mount Seymour says the cold snap will help cool the ground, and they are only a couple of storms away from opening.

“Typically, we like a base in the parking lot of about 85 centimeter to a meter,” says Whitehead. “That’s two good West Coast storms.”
