WINNIPEG – An intense winter storm moving in from the west will wallop Churchill, Man., on Friday, Environment Canada warns.
A powerful cold front expected to hit the Churchill and York regions on Friday afternoon will bring northwesterly winds gusting to 80 kilometres per hour and near-zero visibility in snow and blowing snow, a storm watch from the weather agency said.
Temperatures are forecast to plunge from -5 C midday to close to -15 C in a matter of hours and five to 10 centimetres of snow will fall, Environment Canada said.
“Avoid travel if possible. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Cold conditions are possible with severe wind chill values,” says the storm watch notice issued at 4:30 a.m. CT.
The blizzard will end early Saturday morning, Environment Canada predicts.
Most of the rest of the province will get strong winds but won’t get as much snow or, farther south, rain.
In Winnipeg, rain and 50 kilometre per hour winds gusting to 80 km/h are predicted for Friday, with sun and cooler conditions forecast for the weekend.
