WATCH: Kelowna hosts Skate Canada Grand Prix

KELOWNA – Some of the world’s best figure skaters have arrived in the Okanagan to take part in Skate Canada’s grand prix event.

There are 55 skaters from 12 different countries.

“The caliber of skating that is here is absolutely as high as you will see at world championships or Olympics. This is literally the cream of the crop,” says Craig Buntin with Skate Canada.

It’s the first time Kelowna has hosted the event which will be seen worldwide.

“It will be broadcast internationally around the world. There will be millions of people watching this event,“ says Buntin.

The four day event started Thursday morning with a practice day.

The official competition begins Friday.

“This place is going to be packed. You will see the roof torn off this place when some of these Canadian skaters lay down what they can do,“ says Buntin.

Liam Firus is one of those Canadian skaters.

The 22-year old Vancouver man performed at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics but admits there’ something special skating in front of a Canadian crowd.

“It’s always fun in front of a home town crowd, “ says Firus. “A Canadian crowd is so nice, so supportive. They support everybody. I just feel comfortable.”

There are still tickets available.

They range in price from $20 to $60.

The event wraps up on Sunday.

Those who garner enough points move on to the grand prix final in Spain in December.
