WATCH: Friends and family gathered in Langley today, to remember Chantal Maclean. As loved-ones remembered the vibrant young girl — they repeated calls for improvements to the highway. Tanya Beja reports.
A Surrey teen killed in a car accident in Delta last Monday was remembered by family and friends at a special memorial today.
Chantal MacLean and her boyfriend Cody Kehler died when their car lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic on Highway 10.
Both MacLean and Kehler were Grade 12 students and well-known rugby players at Clayton Heights Secondary in Surrey.
Chantel’s sister Shakeira MacLean says the memorial will give family and friends an opportunity to celebrate her sister’s spirit.
She says the family has been grieving and spending a lot of time together.
“We are supporting each other and sharing love for my sister,” says Shakeira.
The family is hearing from a lot of people reaching out and sharing Chantal’s story. “The support has been wonderful. It’s been beautiful for me to see that people who have never even met her can get the essence of her personality. It’s been so positive,” says Shakeira.

MacLean says the word “inspiring” comes to mind when she thinks of her sister.
“She has an incredible personality. She is hugely energetic when she enters the room. Her smile is so bright.”
The family has started a scholarship fund in Chantal’s name to help carry on her legacy.
The scholarship will be awarded at Chantal’s school, Clayton Heights, at the end of the year.
“It will support other students who exemplify the spirit, fierceness, compassion and leadership that she really contributed to her school and the athletic community,” says Shakeira.
