WATCH: Family doctors accepting new patients in South Okanagan are scarce

PENTICTON, BC — A South Okanagan man who has been battling severe back pain after a massive fall that also left him with brain trauma says he’s been abandoned by the system.

Randie Walter, 63, fell four storeys in 1979. That accident still causes him tremendous agony.

He says he depends on Dilaudid, a strong painkiller, to help him perform daily tasks.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But he claims that his family doctor has abandoned him and now he’s left to find a physician who can prescribe the medication he needs.

“I haven’t found any doctors who are taking new patients,” he says.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia’s (CPSBC) website doesn’t turn up any doctors who are accepting new patients.

“It makes me feel pretty angry about the doctor situation in B.C., when you can’t get a doctor for someone like him who needs a doctor,” says brother Robbie Kilborn.

Walter says he isn’t sure why his doctor made the decision.

He’s filed a complaint with CPSBC about his family doctor.

Global News tried reaching the doctor for comment, but he is away for the month.
