FREDERICTON – New Brunswick’s new Liberal premier says experience was the major factor in choosing the members of his cabinet.

Brian Gallant and the other 12 members of the cabinet were sworn in Tuesday, with some taking on several portfolios.

Gallant says it made sense to combine finance and infrastructure for Roger Melanson.

The Liberals have promised to spend $900 million on infrastructure over the next six years as a way to create jobs.

As well, he says the new government will take quick action on issues such as access to abortion.

Gallant has also promised a moratorium on fracking for shale gas, but says he first wants to look at how other jurisdictions have introduced moratoriums.

The Liberals won 27 seats in last month’s provincial election, ousting the Progressive Conservatives from power.

The Tories have 21 seats, while the Green Party leader David Coon won his seat.

2 women among Liberal cabinet ministers

Gallant also announced he taking on a number of duties besides the top job, including minister responsible for women’s equality.

He says he’s assuming the job because there aren’t enough women elected in his caucus.

Of the 27 Liberals elected last month, only four are women. Two were sworn in as cabinet ministers Tuesday.

Cathy Rogers is the new minister of social development, as well as minister of healthy and inclusive communities.

Francine Landry takes on the post-secondary education, training and labour portfolio.

She is also minister responsible for La Francophonie.

Gallant says his government needs to work on getting more women elected.
