WINNIPEG-On Friday, 8-year-old Isabella Burgos arrived to school quite surprised to see a sea of pink. Dozens of kids at her school dyed their hair and wore pink clothing in support of the student.

“I didn’t even know that was going to happen,” said Bella.

On Thursday, the hashtag #Pink4Bella started trending on Twitter. Her story spread nation-wide on Thursday after the Grade 3 student was told she wasn’t allowed to use the girls’ washroom. Bella was born a boy but came out as transgender this past summer. Her parents, Dale and Izzy Burgos, told Global News that she was allowed to use the girls’ washroom at first, but after complaints from a parent Bella was told she had to use the gender neutral washroom. They have since filed a complaint with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission.

“It may not change things for Bella, but I think it’s making a difference for transgender children,” said Izzy. “That’s bigger than I ever hoped.”
