WATCH: Kid breaks military protocol during emotional homecoming

TORONTO – A Minnesota three-year-old was so excited to see his military mom home from Afghanistan, he wasn’t going to let protocol stand in the way of reuniting with her.

Kathryn Waldvogel returned home Tuesday after a nine-month tour and was standing with fellow soldiers waiting to be officially dismissed of duty.

That’s when her son Cooper decided to dart across the gymnasium floor and jump into his mother’s open arms.

“I was longing to hold him, that’s all that I thought about,” Waldvogel told KARE 11 News.

The mother and fellow soldiers were reportedly told they were not allowed to speak to family members who were waiting in the auditorium until they were officially dismissed.

“All of a sudden we had to file into the building and get into formation, and I just look up and Cooper and my mom are right there,” Waldvogel said. “He just kept smiling like he was in awe of me.”
