VANCOUVER — Five protesters chained themselves to a fence today, in protest of Kinder Morgan and its proposed oil pipeline in Burnaby Mountain, after the company chopped down trees in the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area.
“The price that people will pay if this pipeline goes through will be way greater than the minute suffering of just being in a detention center for a few hours,” protester Adam Gold told Global News. At least one person was arrested in the incident.
Kinder Morgan released a statement in response, saying it respects the right to peaceful protest, but must protect the safety of its staff.
Activists are cheering on the City of Burnaby for taking the issue to B.C. Supreme Court and fighting for a temporary injunction to stop Kinder Morgan from cutting more forest in the area.
“This is a long war, I don’t bank on one battle determining the course of the war. Obviously, making an interim injunction is one of the ways we can protect our by-law,” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan told Global News.
