CALGARY- A $170,000 piece of artwork is set to be installed in front of a southwest Calgary fire hall.

‘Under the Helmet’ was created by award-winning Canadian artist Ilan Sandler, and is an aluminum sculpture of a firefighter’s helmet.

“I visited a number of fire stations in Calgary, met with several firefighters, and interviewed them to get a sense of some of the major hurdles they face,” Sandler said. “I came up with this concept of creating a very large firefighter’s helmet and situating it in such a way that viewers will be able to walk under it and, and in effect, stand inside the helmet when they’re looking at the sculpture.”

The sculpture is being installed in front of the Windsor Park Fire Station, and will take about four days to put up.
